Frequently asked questions
1. What is your GPA cutoff?
We don’t have a specific GPA cutoff. But we do look at marks, and they play a role in your application. We also place a lot of value on extracurricular activities, volunteering, and work experience. What are we ultimately looking for? Someone with balance.
2. My grades don’t reflect my ability. Should I apply?
Absolutely. Grades do factor into your application, but we look at other parts of your resume too. Extracurricular involvement, work experience and/or volunteer experience also count in your favour.
3. How many students do you hire?
Last fall we hired more than 500 students and new graduates, co-ops and interns. Your chance of getting hired as a student depends on the office you apply to and the type of role you’re looking for.
4. How can I apply to other Canadian or global offices?
All our jobs, for all our roles across the country, are posted on our career site at www.deloitte.ca/careers Our member firms around the globe also use the same website, so you can simply switch the location to view jobs in different countries. Be sure to speak to the HR representative on campus if you are interested in a role in a different office or country.
5. Do I need accounting experience to be considered?
Absolutely not. If you look at some of our employees’ profiles, you’ll see we have former teachers, salespeople and humanitarian volunteers alongside our trained accountants. If you’re a new grad, co-op or summer intern, we actually assume you have no experience – and we provide you with all the learning you need to build a strong foundation to be successful within our firm.
6. Is there someone at Deloitte I may contact or email about their experiences?
Please reach out to the Lead Deloitte Campus Recruiter for your school. Not sure who that is? Ask your career centre and see if they can connect you with our Ambassador on campus.
7. Should I email you my resume?
There’s no need – all of our applications are accepted through our website at www.deloitte.ca/careers. We actually use a paperless process, so if you send in your resume via mail or e-mail, it could be missed.
8. How many clients will I go to?
Honestly, it depends. Some of us work for one large client, and only that client. Others service a variety of clients, each with their own unique needs. Because we’re a large firm, you have options.
9. What will my first day be like? First week? What will my office be like?
Your first day will probably be devoted to onboarding and training, but you’ll also begin right away to get a feel for your new work environment. Each of our offices is different – but what they have in common is a group of people who want to help you succeed, access to Deloitte’s global resources, and the promise of a fresh challenge every day.
10. Where can I turn for advice with my offer?
At Deloitte, there are many people you can turn to. Every office has at least one HR professional, interviewer or recruiter who can provide advice relating to your offer, benefits, or personal needs. Partners are also available to answer a wide variety of questions.
11. Who will I be able to count on when I’m part of Deloitte?
If you join our team, you will have access to a first class coaching and mentoring program. Experienced professionals at all levels are willing and able to help launch and guide your career.
12. Do you have casual Fridays? Do I have to wear formal business attire?
Some of our offices do have casual Fridays. Please check with your designated HR professional for the dress code in your office. Our usual recommendation is to dress the way your client does. If your client is an investment bank, then dress in business attire. If your client’s workplace is business casual, feel free to follow. When you start, your engagement leader will help you figure out your client’s work environment.
13. Partners intimidate me. How can I approach them and interact with them?
The idea of talking with a partner might seem intimidating. But our business is focused on bringing in new grads, co-ops and summer interns, and they will do their best to be available. When approaching partners, just relax and remember that they’re people too!
14. What is a partner? What does it take to become a partner?
A partner is actually an owner of the business. Our partners are the primary shareholders of Deloitte. Part of their commitment is to grow the business and sell our services to clients. To become a partner within our firm, it takes experience, leadership, a strong work ethic, and a passion for quality and client service.
15. What if I’m a mature student?
If you’re a mature student, you have the same opportunity at Deloitte as everyone else. Your previous work experience may even give you an advantage.
16. What do I need to be considered for a CA position?
You need to have completed the prerequisite courses specified by your provincial institute for a new grad position or be on your way to completing all course requirements as a co-op or intern.
17. Can I transfer to other global offices?
Yes – but the opportunity is based on business needs and your performance. One of the benefits of working for a global firm is that we have offices all over the world. If there is a position available and you meet the requirements, we can help you make a global transfer happen.
18. Can I switch services?
Yes – but the opportunity is based on business needs and your performance. One of the benefits of working for a global firm is that we have offices all over the world. If there is a position available and you meet the requirements, we can help you make a global transfer happen.
19. Will I travel while I’m going through the CA process?
Typically, your CA experience hours must be earned within the province from which you’re getting your CA. However, depending on the length and location of your travel, there may be options. It all depends on your clients and personal preference. What we can promise is that we will help tailor your work experience so that you get exactly what you want out of your career.
20. Why should I do my CA in public accounting rather than industry?
Simple: training and experience. We’ve been training CAs for years, and we have the learning programs to help you through the UFE process.
21. Do you work 12 hours a day?
One of the most common remarks in our employee profiles is that there’s no such thing as a typical day. Many of our people do work that varies during the year, with “busy seasons” that call for extra hours. On the other end of the spectrum, it’s possible to make special work arrangements for parenting or other needs. Whatever your role, we’ll help you find a routine that fits both your job and your life.
22. What sports teams are available?
We have a wide variety of sports teams available – everything from baseball to hockey, dragon boating and running teams, among others – but the specifics vary from office to office. If the team you’d like to play on isn’t available in your office, we encourage you to start one.
23. Are you friends with your colleagues?
Our environment is very team focused, and it’s pretty common for our people to end up as friends. Our teams tend to work hard and play hard – together.
24. What is Impact Day?
Impact day is single day each year when everyone at Deloitte gives back to the community. Our people take part in whatever needs to be done, from painting to park cleanup to helping cook at a women’s shelter.
25. Do I have to have a car? I don’t drive, how can I get to a client?
You may be able to reach some clients’ locations via public transportation. If you don’t drive, and the client is not accessible via public transportation, you can work with your engagement leader to arrange a carpool. You’ll also be contributing to the environment.
26. I spend time volunteering. How can I ensure I don’t have to give that up?
We take volunteer activities very seriously and understand how important they are to our people. We encourage flexibility in schedules to accommodate volunteering, and have a number of firm-sponsored community events that our people can participate in.
27. What opportunities are there for me if I don’t want to pursue my CA?
We offer positions in Enterprise Risk, Financial Advisory, and Consulting that are not part of the CA stream. Take a look at some profiles of our non-CA people.
28. How do I decide which service I’d like to work in?
The first step is to read the profiles of people from the different services on our website. Then take the time to talk to individuals from our different services. They’ll be able to give you the insight you need! We also have a tool called “Find your fit” that takes five minutes or less to use. It can help guide you to a service that may be the best fit for you.
