Ethical principles: guiding our people

Deloitte member firms are committed to the highest levels of ethics, integrity and quality. This is evidenced by the member firms, business practices and client service standards, leadership behavior and shared values, and most importantly, by the quality of people we employ. In fact, ethics, integrity and quality are at the core of all that Deloitte member firms do.

Deloitte member firms have a vital role in sustaining the public's trust and maintaining investor confidence. They take this role seriously and that is why they have made integrity and quality the cornerstones of their businesses.

Adopted by each of Deloitte's member firms and linking directly to the shared values, these nine principles define the standards of ethical behavior that unite all the people of Deloitte's member firms.

The principles are:

  • Honesty and integrity
  • Professional behavior
  • Competence
  • Objectivity
  • Confidentiality
  • Fair business practices
  • Responsibility to society
  • Respect and fair treatment
  • Accountability and decision making

Deloitte assigns the greatest priority to demonstrating integrity and quality throughout the global organization and its member firms, regardless of the type of service our member firms provide or where they deliver it. Deloitte fully understands that the public's perception of its member firms' clients can be influenced by its perception of Deloitte, which makes us even more committed to instilling these principles in all we do. These characteristics are the foundation of Deloitte's distinctive brand and reputation, and we would never jeopardize either, for any member firm client, regardless of the circumstances.

Integrity Compass

To help bring these principles to life, Deloitte has developed a unique global learning tool called The Integrity Compass. The Integrity Compass uses real ethical dilemmas to show the subject, and importance, of ethics in the workplace. Appropriate for all levels and functions in each Deloitte member firm, the objective of the exercise is to help build awareness about the diverse mix of ethical situations that can arise in Deloitte member firms' daily work, as well as understand the importance of consultation and the Ethical principles and shared values in making the best professional choices.
